Funding will be used for maintenance at the cemetery

STATEHOUSE (April 19, 2024) – The Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery located in Madison is set receive $139,000 in state funding to help address needed repairs, according to State Rep. Alex Zimmerman (R-North Vernon).

The State Budget Committee voted to release the funds during their meeting Friday at the Statehouse. Zimmerman said the money will be used for renovations to the site's administrative services building exterior and mechanical systems.

"This cemetery is a standing reminder of the many Hoosiers who served in the armed forces and offers assistance to grieving families in their time of need," said Zimmerman, a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee. "This memorial has helped thousands lay their loved ones to rest, and I'm grateful for all the work they've done over the years to honor our state's service members."

The cemetery, located east of Clifty Falls State Park, offers assistance for the burial of eligible veterans and spouses, including covering the costs for opening and closing burial plots, outer burial containers and monuments. Families can also request a memorial certificate from the governor's office.

Zimmerman said the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery will host a Memorial Day event on May 27. The site will also participate in Wreaths Across America, a yearly day of remembrance for armed forces members who have died. To learn more about these events or to volunteer, visit in.gov/dva.
