Nine Arrested in Seven Days by MPD

Madison Police Department-July 26, 2023

July 25 2023, Madison Police arrested James Sentell, 57 y/o, and Jerry Cox, 53 y/o, both of  Madison, Indiana, on narcotic related charges.  Sentell and Cox were arrested as a result of an investigation led by Madison Police Patrol Officer Trent Smith.  Ptl. Smith conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Sentell and based upon the officer’s observations, an open-air sniff was conducted by his K9 partner Colt. K9 Colt gave a positive indication on the vehicle to his handler. Following a subsequent search of the vehicle by Ptl. Smith, he located methamphetamine and paraphernalia.  Sentell and Cox were both arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Paraphernalia.  

Possession of Methamphetamine, Level 6 Felony

Possession of Paraphernalia, Class C Misdemeanor

Cox also had outstanding arrest warrants through Jefferson County. Sentell and Cox both have the presumption of innocence until otherwise proven guilty.  Captain McKay assisted Ptl. Smith with the investigation.

July 24, 2023, Madison Police arrested Shawn Colen, 43 y/o of Rising Sun, IN and Cassandra Combs, 32 y/o of Madison on narcotic related charges. Ptl. Shelpman conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Colen and a search of the vehicle was conducted after statements were made by Colen and Combs. During the search, officers located narcotics inside the vehicle. Both subjects were placed under arrest. Shawn Colen was charged with Possession of a Legend Drug and Cassandra Combs was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of a Legend Drug, and Possession of Marijuana. Combs was also issued a citation for a seatbelt violation. Ptl. Shelpman was assisted on scene by Ptl. Wimpee and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Taylor.

Both subjects were taken into custody without incident. Combs and Colen have a presumption of innocence until otherwise proven guilty but face the following preliminary, alleged charges:

Colen - Possession of a Legend Drug, Level 6 Felony

Combs- Possession of Methamphetamine, Level 6 Felony

Possession of a Legend Drug, Level 6 Felony

Possession of Marijuana, B Misdemeanor

July 24, 2023, Madison Police arrested two individuals for Residential Entry and narcotics related charges following an investigation led by Ptl. Wimpee. On the above date, officers were dispatched to an apartment building in downtown Madison after a concerned neighbor observed two individuals, later identified as Ashton Marts, 31 y/o and Emma Grubbs, 25 y/o, both of Madison, entering the apartment through unsecured window.

Both subjects were located nearby and taken into custody without incident after it was learned that they did not have permission to be in the apartment. Ptl. Wimpee was assisted in the investigation by Ptl. Shelpman. The pair face the following preliminary charges but have a presumption of innocence until otherwise proven guilty:

Marts: Residential Entry, Level 6 Felony

             Possession of Methamphetamine, Level 6 Felony

             Possession of Paraphernalia, C Misdemeanor

Grubbs: Residential Entry, Level 6 Felony             

A special thanks goes out to the concerned citizen that initially observed the pair entering the building. This also serves as a great reminder for the citizens of Madison to be vigilant and to alert the police anytime they observe something suspicious or out of the ordinary.

July 22, 2023, Madison Police arrested Lawrence Davis 31 y/o and Melinda Ward, 26 y/o, both of Madison. After observing a traffic violation, Ptl. Shelpman conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle driven by Davis. After an open-air sniff of the vehicle by K9 Lycan and his handler, Deputy Logan Gray, the K9 gave a positive indication on the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted. During the search officers located narcotics and paraphernalia inside the vehicle. Davis and Ward were arrested on the following charges:

Davis: Possession of Marijuana, B Misdemeanor

Ward: Possession of Methamphetamine, Level 6 Felony

            Possession Paraphernalia, C Misdemeanor

Davis and Ward have a presumption of innocence until otherwise proven guilty. Ptl. Shelpman was assisted in the investigation by Deputy Gray, K9 Lycan, Ptl. Potter and Sgt. Watson.

July 19, 2023, Madison Police arrested William Lucas, 47 y/o, of Louisville Kentucky on narcotics related charges. Ptl. Shelpman conducted a traffic stop of Lucas’ vehicle after observing a traffic violation. Deputy McMindes and his K9 partner Eddie conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle. After giving a positive alert on the vehicle, officers conducted a search, where they located approximately 3.3 grams of suspected methamphetamine. Lucas faces the following preliminary charges but has a presumption of innocence until proven guilty:

Possession of Methamphetamine, Level 6 Felony

Operator Never Licensed, C Misdemeanor

Ptl. Shelpman was assisted by Ptl. Heffelfinger, Deputy McMindes and K9 Eddie.
